HAMER, SC, July 11, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/– Kevin L. McLellan has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An expert in music education, Mr. McLellan has been an accomplished music teacher for more than 15 years. Having come of age in a family of music lovers, he was primed for a creative career from his youth. He was inspired to pursue music education by his previous band director, Mr. Adrian Wright, as well as his uncles, who were also musicians.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. McLellan earned a Bachelor of Music from Claflin University in 2006 where he was named to the Dean’s List and President’s List. Following this accomplishment, he served as the band director for J.V. Martin Junior High School from 2006 until 2010. He subsequently continued his career at both R.B. Dean and Southside Ashpole Elementary Schools in the Robeson County School District, where he taught music from 2010 until 2012.
Since 2012, Mr. McLellan has been the director of bands and an instructor for Dillon Middle School where he teaches music classes for students in sixth through eighth grade. He has achieved much in decade, including:
—Increased the numbers of students enrolled from 75 to about 130.
—Helped organize Music Replay, a fundraiser that gained over 100 instruments and money donations.
—Reignited interest in district and region band auditions.
—Achieved an Excellent rating (2nd highest) at the SCBDA Concert Festival, first since 1985.
—Selected as Clinician for the Region 5 Junior Alternate Band.
—Only South Carolina middle school band to participate in the UNC-Pembroke Honor Band Clinic.
—Interview by various television stations.
—Presented a Memorabilia Plaque by Former Senator Kay Patterson for Outstanding Achievement.
—J.V. Martin Jr. High School 8th Grade band received a rating of EXCELLENT at the South Carolina Band Director Concert Assessment in 2008.
—Dillon Middle School 7th Grade Beginner Band received a rating of EXCELLENT at the SCBDA (South Carolina Band Director Association) Concert Assessment from 2012-2016.
—Dillon Middle School 8th Grade Band received a rating of EXCELLENT at the SCBDA Concert Assessment in 2013-2014.
The Band program at Dillon Middle School received the highest award given by The South Carolina Band Director Association the OPA Award (Outstanding Performance Award) 2014-2019.
—Dillon Middle School 7th Beginner Band received a rating of EXCELLENT at the SCBDA Concert Assessment 2016-2019.
—Dillon Middle School 8th Grade Winds received a rating of SUPERIOR WITH DISTICTION at the SCBDA Concert Assessment at Loris High School, Loris SC, 2021-2022.
—Dillon Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band received a rating of SUPERIOR at the Carowinds Festival of Music at Carowinds. First time in the history of the Dillon Middle Program performing at Carowinds, 2021-2022.
Additionally, Mr. McLellan is a musician with his local church and volunteers with a mentor group for young men in his community. He attributes his success to his supportive parents and his Christian faith. He feels blessed to have a solid network of supportive friends and family. In a career filled with highlights, he is most proud of the time his students received the OPA Award in 2015. Looking toward the future, Mr. McLellan aspires to witness his band students advance to significantly higher platforms.
Mr. McLellan is an active member of the National Band Association, Prince Hall Masonic Fraternity, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated, National Association for Music Educators, Prince Hall Masonry, Carpenters Consistory#164 Valley of NC, Ouda Temple#147 (Shriner) Oasis of Maxton NC Desert of NC, and Order of the Eastern Star #133 Rowland NC. He is also Grand Inspector General of the 33rd Degree with the United Supreme Council of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows of America.
In recognition of his achievements, Mr. McLellan was named Teacher of the Year for 2020-2021. He also received a Program of Note Award for 2019-2020, a Gold Award, a Distinguished Performance Certificate, and received endorsement by Nord Keyboards in 2016. Additionally, he was honored with a Gold Music Award (Distinguished Performance Certificate) from Claflin University and numerous honors as a band director. He was featured on the Hammond Organ World Website in 2019.
