The Latta Vikings varsity basketball team defeated the visiting Andrews Yellowjackets 51-20 in Latta on Thursday, February 9.
Andrews controlled the opening tip-off and scored the first 2 points of the game and followed up with another 2 points before Latta’s Savad Mcgirt connected for a 3-point basket followed by Phil Davis who made a 2-point basket to give Latta a 5-4 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Latta’s Darius Griffin added a 2-point lay-up before Andrews’ Cameron Cumbee made a 2-point shot. Phil Davis scored 2 points to give Latta a 9-6 lead. Tydreck Deberry connected for 3 points from the corner to give Latta the largest lead of the game, 12-6. Andrews’ began to whittle away at the lead as Antwan Davis sank a 3 from the corner. However, Latta’s Jamar Jones sank a 2-point basket. Rodshaun Dorsey hit a 3 from the corner to cut Latta’s lead to 14-12 after the first quarter. Latta committed 1 foul while Andrews did not commit a foul in the first quarter.
The game continued with Latta holding a slight lead until the game was knotted at 18. With 1:52 remaining in the first half, Savad Mcgirt made a lay-up to give Latta a 20-18 lead at halftime. Latta committed 4 fouls in the second quarter. Once again, Andrews did not commit a foul.
Latta slowly began to get a better lead. With 2:42 remaining in the third, Latta was up 26-21. By the end of the third quarter, Latta held a 10-point lead, 34-24. Latta committed 4 fouls in the third quarter while Andrews committed 3 fouls.
Early in the fourth quarter, Latta had a 13-point cushion, 39-26. Support your team.
