The Dillon Wildcats picked up a 38-34 win over the Waccamaw Warriors in Junior Varsity Basketball played in Dillon on Tuesday, February 8.
Dillon controlled he tip-off and wasted little time in scoring the first 2 points of the game. Dillon’s #4 quickly added another 2-point basket followed by a free throw by #15. Waccamaw’s #24 connected for a 3-point basket that was answered by a 2-point basket from Dillon’s #15. Dillon’s #3 grabbed an offensive rebound and scored 2 points that was followed by Waccamaw’s #23 who banked one in for 2 points. Waccamaw’s #1 scored 2 points on a lay-up and was fouled and also converted the 1-point free throw. After the first quarter of play, Dillon held a slim 1-point lead, 9-8 over the visitors. Dillon was guilty of 3 fouls while Waccamaw was guilty of 4 fouls in the first quarter.
With 5 minutes remaining in the second quarter of play, Waccamaw’s #33 sank a 3-point shot to go up 11-9. Dillon’s #41 grabbed an offensive rebound and scored 2 points to knot the score at 11. Dillon’s #10 connected on a 2-point basket to once again give Dillon a 13-11 lead. With 2:47 remaining in the first half, Waccamaw’s #13 sank a free throw to cut Dillon’s lead to 1 point, 13-12. Waccamaw’s #41 gave his team a 14-13 lead with his 2-point basket with 7 seconds remaining in the first half. Dillon committed 4 fouls in this quarter while Waccamaw committed 2 fouls.
Dillon regained the lead with a 2-point basket to go up 15-14 early in the third quarter of play. However, Waccamaw’s #55 made a lay-up to regain the lead, 16-15. Waccamaw’s #24 connected for 2 points that was answered by Dillon with a 2-point basket. Dillon’s #41 sank a long 3 to regain the lead, 21-20. Dillon’s #23 followed with a 2-point basket with 2:11 remaining in the third quarter. Dillon’s #4 made a lay-up good for 2 points followed by a 3-point basket by Dillon’s #41 to give Dillon a 27-21 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Dillon was hit with a goal-tending to give Waccamaw a 2-point basket. After 3 quarters of play, Dillon was up 27-23. Each team committed 2 fouls in the quarter.
Waccamaw’s #33 made a long 3-point shot to cut Dillon’s lead to 1 point, 27-26, in the early going of the final quarter. Dillon’s #4 made 3 points the old-fashioned way. He sank a 2-point basket and a free throw to give Dillon a 34-26 lead with 3:45 remaining in the game. Waccamaw’s #23 connected for 3 points to cut Dillon’s lead to 34-29. Waccamaw’s #20 scored 2 points to cut Dillon’s lead to 3 points, 34-31. With 1:06 remaining in the game, Waccamaw’s #1 knotted the score at 34 with a 3-point basket. Dillon’s #41 made a lay-up. With 8 seconds on the clock, Dillon’s #4 sank the first of a 1-in-1 and then also made the other free throw to give Dillon the 38-34 win. Dillon committed 3 fouls, and Waccamaw committed 5 fouls in the final quarter of play.
