The Latta Vikings picked up a 25-22 win over the visiting Kingstree Jaguars in the waning moments of the varsity football game played in Latta on Friday, September 10, on a field goal by Krish Patel.
Latta took the opening kick off and started offense on the 50-yard line and quickly picked up 2 first downs before facing a fourth down and being dropped in the backfield.
The Kingstree Jaguars took over. After the Jaguars were penalized and unable to advance the football, Latta took over on the 49-yard line of Kingstree. Latta’s Kartrell Townsend and Jamar Jones each picked up a first down to get the offense in the right direction. Jamar Jones scored from the 12-yard line after the reception to give Latta the first lead of the game, 6-0. The PAT was good to increase Latta’s lead to 7-0.
The Kingstree Jaguars took the kick off to their own 48-yard line. Latta committed a penalty followed by 2 penalties against Kingstree prior to the Jaguars’ quarterback being sacked by Andrew Bryant. Unable to move the football, Kingstree was forced to punt that gave Latta the ball on their own 43-yard line.
Faced with third and 7, Jamar Jones was once again on the receiving end of a touchdown pass with 49.9 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Latta’s PAT was good to give Latta a 14-0 lead.
Latta went with an onside kick that the Jaguars handled and had good field position on their own 48-yard line. After Latta and Kingstree were guilty of penalties, the Jaguars began to move the ball. The Jaguars’ quarterback kept the ball and scored from the 1-yard line with 7:58 remaining in the half. Kingstree’s #7 carried the football in for 2 points to cut Latta’s lead 14-8.
At halftime, Latta was up 14-8.
The Latta band performed at halftime to the pleasure of all in attendance.
The Latta Vikings kicked off to Kingstree to begin the third quarter. Kingstree’s #12 scampered 70 yards for the touchdown with 11:45 remaining in the third quarter. Kingstree converted the 2-point play with a successful pass to give Kingstree a 16-14 lead.
Latta started on their own 33-yard line. Faced with a fourth and 15, Latta’s punt ended up on Kingstree’s 15-yard line.
Kingstree was forced to punt on a fourth and 18. Latta took over on the 40-yard line of Kingstree with great field position.
Latta was also unable to move the ball and was forced to punt. Kingstree took over. Kingstree’s #6 scored with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter. Kingstree was not successful in the 2-point conversion attempt. Kingstree led 22-14.
Latta faced a fourth and 2 and successfully scored with 7:13 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 2 points, 22-20. Kartrell Townsend tossed one into the end zone for 2 points to knot the score at 22 each.
The Latta defense held and took over on their own 19-yard line. Latta managed to get to the 12-yard line before receiving 2 penalties. With only 13.9 seconds remaining in the game, Latta’s Krish Patel connected for the winning field goal to give Latta a 25-22 win over Kingstree.
Latta’s Kartrell Townsend attempted 19 passes and completed 11 for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns.
For the receivers for Latta: Jamar Jones caught 7 passes for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns while Phillip Davis had 3 catches for 32 yards. D.J. Griffin caught 1 pass for 20 yards.
Latta’s Jamar Jones carried 10 times for 42 yards while Kartrell Townsend carried 5 times for 35 yards. Holden Matthews carried 6 times for 25 yards, and Tydriec Deberry carried 1 time for a yard.
On defense for Latta: Andrew Bryant had 12 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and a sack. Gabe Sherman had 11 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery. Michael McKenzie had 7 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Eli Jones had 7 tackles and a tackle for loss. Dorian Griffin had 6 tackles. Justin Stutler had 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack. Slaydon Strickland had 5 tackles. Nick Lane had 2 tackles and a tackle for a loss. Jamar Jones had 2 tackles. Michael Hunt, Desmond Price, Phillip Davis, Jakoby German, and Ricky German each had a tackle.
Latta Head Coach Brandon Iseman stated “I am very proud of the way our team continued to fight”.
Latta will face Lee Central this Friday, September 17, at Lee Central.
