Wednesday, December 16, was a big day in the life of Avery Hewitt as he signed with Campbell University and Ahmari Huggins-Bruce signed with the University of Louisville to further their education and football careers at the next level.
Both were surrounded by family, friends, coaching staff, and other well-wishers at Dillon High School for the signing.
Avery Hewitt took the stage first.
Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jackie Hayes spoke highly of his 4-year player who was a starter for 3 years on the offensive line for the Dillon Wildcats. Hayes remarked that Hewitt was the kind of player that every coach wanted. Hewitt has a bright future. Hayes informed Hewitt’s parents that he really appreciated that he was allowed to coach Avery. Avery always tried to better himself. Coach Hayes reminded Hewitt that his family had set the standards for him and much was expected of him.
Hewitt has been playing football for the Wildcats the past four years. He has enjoyed his time on the football team at Dillon High School where he has made many friends.
He was influenced mostly by his parents in this sport.
His best memory of Dillon High School was winning the 2-A State Championship in his freshman year.
He has learned much from the coaching staff and has formed a good work ethic.
He will take what he has learned while playing on the offensive line for the Wildcats with him to Campbell University where he should be a good fit because of the atmosphere there and should become a new “home” for him as he pursues his education and plays the sport he loves…football.
Hewitt received several awards while at Dillon High School including 2018 HSSR All-State Rookie Team, 2019 High School Blitz Offensive Lineman of the Year, 2019 HSSR AAA All-State Team, 2020 Evening Sports Page, and Pre-Season All Pee Dee Team.
Hewitt enjoys hunting in his spare time while not playing football and studying.
Avery’s parents, Leslie and Jimmy Hewitt, are very proud of their son…not only his football abilities but also his studying abilities. Both exclaimed “We are very excited for him as he pursues his education and football career at the next level. We expect more and greater accomplishments from him.”
Ahmari Huggins-Bruce was up next. Coach Hayes stated that Ahmari has never lacked confidence in anything he has done. Ahmari is an early graduate and a dynamic player.
It appeared that Coach Hayes, also Ahmari, recalled the game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia for the state championship in which the Dillon Wildcats were on their own one-half yard line, and freshman Ahmari wearing #9 went the distance of 99 1/2 yards to score and turn the game around for Dillon.
Ahmari Huggins-Bruce will probably be a slot receiver at Louisville where he will major in sports management. At Dillon, he was a wide receiver.
Ahmari received the award for the fastest 3-cone shuttle time in the National Combine.
He carries his hard work ethic with him.
Ahmari had offers from 38 schools but he chose Louisville as he believes he will be a good fit there as the team has a fast-paced offense. In his spare time, he enjoys playing drums and drawing.
Twyla and Eric Bruce are very proud of their son as evidenced when they speak of him. Both exclaimed “we are expecting great things from him as he plays football.”
Both players thanked their families, friends, and coaches for all that they did for them, on and off the field. Both also recognized and thanked the entire coaching staff.
