The Latta Vikings junior varsity football team came on strong in the second half to hand the McBee Panthers a 32-8 loss in Latta on Thursday, October 8, in the first game of the season.
Latta scored first and held a 6-0 lead but McBee’s quarterback tossed a 9-yard pass into the end zone for a score with 46.5 seconds remaining in the first half. The 2-point conversion pass play gave McBee an 8-6 lead at halftime.
Latta took the second-half opening kick-off, and immediately the Latta quarterback completed a pass to #4 for a first down. However, a penalty against Latta erased that. The Latta quarterback fired a long pass to #3 for a touchdown to take a 12-8 lead. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.
Latta would never trail again in the game.
After the kick-off return by the Panthers, #8 carried for a first down. On the next play, McBee fumbled and Latta recovered with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter.
Latta’s #3 quickly scored with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter to go up 18-8 over the visitors.
McBee was forced to punt on the next possession. Latta took over on offense on McBee’s 41-yard line. With 16.9 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Latta’s #2 scored after the pass reception. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.
After 3 quarters of play, Latta was up 24-8.
After the kick-off return, McBee’s quarterback threw an interception, and Latta’s #4 carried the pigskin into the end zone with 7:12 remaining in the game. Latta’s #2 converted the 2-point rushing play to give Latta a 32-8 lead.
Latta began substituting players.
McBee continued on offense to close out the game.
