Senior quarterback Jay Lester threw for two touchdowns and sophomore running back Nemo Squire ran for two more to lead the Dillon Wildcats to a 49-0 shutout of the Latta Vikings at Memorial Stadium Friday evening. It was the second straight shutout of the young season for the defensive unit of the Cats, which humbled the Purnell Swett, NC, a 4A school near Pembroke, 42-0.
Defensive corner back Daizion Alford picked off a Tray Pelt pass in full stride at the Viking 42 and raced untouched for a touchdown for the fifth score of the half. Pelt was one for eight passing and threw his second interception of the game in the second half.
Senior wide receiver Amari Huggins-Bruce caught four out of five target passes from Lester for 130 yards to highlight a 173-yard total first half through the air. Lester completed all but two of his eight attempts. Nigel George, who ran mostly behind the second offensive unit in the 2018 season, was the leading rusher in the game with 63 yards on six carries, including a 6-yard touchdown. The touchdown passes caught by Huggins-Bruce covered 31 and 67 yards.
Latta was held to 65 total yards, with 52 coming on the ground and only 13 through the air on a reception by Chandler Matthews, while the Wildcats totaled 314 overall in offense, with 141 yards rushing. Freshman Juste Ndayishimiye (Pronounced: DAY’-SHU-MIA) carried the ball in reserve seven times for 33 yards and back-up quarterback BoBo McKinnon netted 29 yards on four carries, including a 1-yard quarterback sneak for the final touchdown in the waning minutes of the game.
Linebacker Tyquan King led the tackle sheet with six take-downs, followed by fellow linebacker Darius Ladson.
The Wildcats will travel to Lake View for a Monday night game, September 16, with the Wild Gators at 7 o’clock and the Vikings will have a bye this week and play Kingstree on Friday, September 20.
