James Allen Meekins of Lake View, South Carolina, was born on June 11, 1939 in Marion County. He passed away on June 27, 2019 in the loving care of McLeod Dillon.
He was the son of the late Frank Corbett Meekins and Margaret Jane Culbreth Meekins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Mae Bernice Rogers Meekins.
Jim went from working on a farm to working at Dixiana and then DuPont where he retired. However, one job never seemed to keep him busy enough so he spent his spare time helping his brothers with their businesses.
Additionally, he served in the Army and then National Guard for over 20 years.
His true passion was the time he spent serving the Lake View School Board for 31 years including serving as board chair.
He also served on the Trinity Behavioral Care Board of Directors, Dillon County Transportation Committee and as a deacon for Piney Grove Baptist Church.
He loved watching the Lake View Wild Gators and Boston Red Sox play.
He is survived by his two children Terry (Baxter) Meekins Sowell and Jamey (Katrina) Allen Meekins; four grandchildren Margaret Culbreth Sowell, Morgan Baxter Sowell, III, Kammer Elizabeth Meekins, and Culbreth James Meekins; sisters Betty Jean Evans and Margaret McKenzie; brothers Frank Meekins, Jr and Leroy Meekins. He was preceded in death by sisters Lottie Price, Virginia Thigpen and Virgie Hayes; brothers Jessie Meekins, Coy Meekins, Edgar Meekins, Herbert Meekins, and Lloyd Meekins. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly as if they were his own.
Terry and Jamey are especially thankful for Aunt Margaret who has been the hands and feet of Jesus caring for their daddy daily.
The entire family would like to thank McLeod Dillon for the warmth and love they showed the family during the final days.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church with graveside immediately following. Visitation will be a 1 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
