The City of Dillon Parks and Recreation Department and the Humane Society of Dillon County joined forces to sponsor their fifth annual Chili Cook-Off on November 17, 2018. Held at the same time as the Holiday Goodness Bazaar inside the Dillon Wellness Center, the Chili Cook-Off was a great success, and the proceeds will fund the Humane Society’s Spay/Neuter program for pets of low-income owners.
Thirteen teams made up of civic groups, businesses, city and county organizations, and also individuals cooked big pots of chili, and guests purchased $5.00 wristbands which enabled them to sample all the chili and cast their votes for the People’s Choice Award. Three judges who were sequestered inside the Wellness Center also sample and rated all the chili in order to declare a Judges’ Award. The following were winners in the competition: Overall Winner of Judges’ Award-Dillon County EMS. First runner-up was the Dillon County Sheriff’s Department, and Second runner-up was the Dillon Kiwanis Club. The Main Street United Methodist Church Methodist Men won the People’s Choice Award for the second year, and the SCDOT won the Best Decorated Cook Station Award for the second year.
Because of the success of this event, many pet owners who would not be able to spay/neuter their pets will have this life-saving procedure done. Over the past five years, the Humane Society of Dillon County has funded countless procedures, and this has helped reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned pets in Dillon County.
If you would like to contribute to this ongoing project, you can mail your tax-deductible donation to the Humane Society of Dillon County at 4160 Glasdrum Drive, Little Rock, SC 29567 or Paypal to Humanesociety ofdilloncounty@gmail.com.
