Lily Marisa Carter of Rock Hill graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages with a Spanish concentration on May 5, 2018. She graduated summa cum laude with a cumulative grade point average of 3.96.
During her last semester at Winthrop, Lily interned at the United Way of York County, SC, where she learned much about writing and reviewing grants, the non-profit agencies in York County, and macro social work.
In Fall of 2017, she was fortunate to work as an undergraduate research assistant, where she helped gather and analyze data to evaluate the needs and level of care of individuals with HIV/AIDS in York County.
From January 2017 until May 2017, Lily studied at the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Fundación José Ortega y Gasset is located in downtown Buenos Aires, one of the largest and most diverse cities in South America. During her trip, Lily immersed herself in the Spanish language by living with a wonderful host family, volunteering at a local orphanage, and traveling to places such as Patagonia, Ecuador, and Uruguay. Additionally, in March of 2016, Lily went with members of the social work department on a week-long trip to Nicaragua to learn more about international social work.
In April of 2016, Lily was inducted into the Phi Alpha Honor Society. Phi Alpha was created to promote humanitarian goals and ideas among scholastically motivated social work students. On April 17, 2018, Lily was awarded the BSW Academic Excellence Award, which is awarded to the senior Bachelor of Social Work student with the highest cumulative grade point average. Also in 2018, she was inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society at Winthrop.
During her time at Winthrop, Lily worked for the school as a biology, anthropology, and Spanish tutor, as well as a lifeguard. She was also vice president of the Social Work Club and a member of the Winthrop Wesley Foundation, a United Methodist campus ministry.
Lily is the daughter of Ralph and Susan Carter of Latta and is a 2014 graduate of Latta High School. She is currently pursuing a career as an officer in the U.S. Army.
