BENNETTSVILLE (October 2017) – For the fourth year in a row, Marlboro Electric Cooperative, Inc. (“MEC”) is reducing energy charges during a time that increases are becoming the new norm. The decrease in rates will benefit members throughout MEC’s service area in Marlboro and Dillon counties.
The rate reduction will apply to all bills rendered on or after November 1, 2017. Residential customers will receive an annualized 5-percent reduction with general service and large power, non-contract customers receiving a 1-percent decrease.
“MEC’s Board has recommended and approved a reduction in rates for all co-op members for an unprecedented fourth year in a row,” said MEC President & CEO William L. Fleming, Jr. “Revenue from MEC’s for-profit arm, Marlboro Development Team (“MDT”), along with better growth than projected throughout our service area, can be credited for this year’s rate reduction. MDT had a strong year and we expect sustained success in the future as we continue to be competitive on projects throughout the region and nation.”
MEC has remained a low-cost leader with rates throughout the years and are now able to offer their members rates lower than their competitors. Now matching energy charges from back in 2008, MEC has quickly become one of the most competitive utilities in the state without sacrificing reliability. “While other utilities are experiencing rate increases for various reasons, thanks to our extremely capable leadership and staff, as well as the growth in our service area along with the success of MDT, we remain excited to provide MEC’s members and the community we serve added pride in their local electric cooperative,” said Bo McInnis, Chairman of MEC.
