The Dillon Historic School Foundation met on Tuesday, July 5 2016 at 7 o’clock p.m. in the conference room of the Dillon County Chamber of Commerce. There were eleven members in attendance, including a new member, Holly Moody.
Chairman Gerald Berry called the meeting to order. Following the roll call, Vice-Chairman Terry Morris offered an invocation.
Secretary Mary Miller read the minutes of the June meeting, and these were approved by the members. At this time, Chairman Berry chose to give Secretary Miller a copy of the Directors & Officers Insurance Policy from the Hanover Insurance Group for her files. The original will be kept in a safe.
Due to the absence of Treasurer Barbara C. Herring, Terry Morris gave the Treasurer’s Report which included contributions made to DHSF since June and membership dues that had been received by the treasurer.
Next on the agenda were items of Unfinished Business. Most prominent of these items were: a final review of DHSF By-Laws—Mary Miller, an update on the City Accommodations Tax research—Mary Miller, the importance of mounting a feasibility study—Mary Miller, and a brief summary of the June 28th meeting called by the Chairman—the purpose of which was to compose responses to questions asked by Burns and Wilcox [Property Insurance]—Gerald Berry.
Several items were presented as New Business. First of all, Lorene Arnette and Gerald Berry presented updates on their searches for roofing contractors. Both Arnette and Berry reported having located two professionals, and repairs are expected to be completed in the very near future—possibly before the next monthly meeting on August 2.
Secondly, members were informed of proposed plans that surfaced during informal discussions with local citizens for utilizing the 1936 gymnasium.
Thirdly, DHSF members of the Historic Marker Ceremony Committee gave a report of the well-attended and well-organized event held on June 24. Note: A DVD of this ceremony has been created by Mr. Steve Johnson and, after editing, this DVD will be presented on the Local TV Channel. This DVD will become a DHSF Archives treasure in years to come.
Finally, Chairman Berry reiterated the importance of DHSF members mounting Grass-Roots Efforts to involve the Dillon community in helping the foundation move forward and achieve the specific goals outlined over the past several years. One suggestion made by Linda Brown was to organize an Open House scheduled for the cooler fall and invite the public inside again for a closer, safer look and to hear and see more detailed plans that DHSF has in store for the 1936 auditorium.
The Chairman chose as his monthly topic “Defining Board Directors’ Responsibilities.” Each elected officer has a specific job description. For DHSF to continue growing, to maintain its mission and to achieve its goals, the officers are expected to accept and fulfill their responsibilities as defined by the By-Laws of The Dillon Historic School Foundation.
After closing remarks were made by the members, Chairman Berry adjourned the meeting.
The next meeting of DHSF will be on Tuesday, August 2 at 7 o’clock in the conference room of The Dillon Chamber of Commerce. Please plan to attend and help DHSF “Reclaim the Past. Proclaim the Future.”
