As Earth Day approaches, the City of Dillon is reminding the public of the importance of recycling.
The city offers curbside recycles pickup in residential areas. These items are picked up the same day curbside roll carts service is performed, Monday – Thursday.
The following items are acceptable material that must be placed in a city provided recyclable container and put out along the curb on the day of residential pick-up: Aluminum can (soft drinks, etc.), Steel cans (soup cans, etc.), Newspapers (no magazines), Cardboard (clean, dry, and unwaxed), Plastic Containers (HDPE 2, PETE 1) Milk and Water Jugs, Soft drink bottles with no lids, and Glass (Clear, Brown, Green Bottles). The following items must be placed beside the curb not in a container: televisions, computers, and monitors.
The following amounts were collected by the city last year:
—Aluminum/metals/steel collected—6,984 lbs.—3.5 tons
—TV/computers/monitors collected—4,680 lbs.—2.3 tons
—Newspaper/magazines collected—36,000 lbs.—18 tons
—Glass collected—10,000 lbs.—5 tons
—Plastics collected —24,060 lbs.—12 tons
A total of 41 tons collected and eliminated from the landfill.
The materials are given to Horry County Solid Waste Authority.
