The Dillon County Council for the Aging began providing low-impact aerobic classes to the 60+ population of Dillon County on April 12, 1994 two afternoons a week. As time went by and the request for more classes grew, they were increased to three mornings a week. Days and times are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-10 am.
Classes are provided by certified aerobics instructor, Donna Hill. She is also certified through the Arthritis Foundation as an Exercise Program Leader. The arthritis foundation classes are offered two times a year for eight consecutive weeks. When these classes are not being provided, participants take advantage of the low-impact aerobic classes.
Funding to assist with the cost of the classes comes from Title III-D of the Older Americans Act. The primary goal of the Evidence-Based Disease and Disability Prevention and Health Promotion Services are to: Empower older persons to adopt healthy lifestyles and behaviors, improve health status, and manage chronic conditions better; reduce their use of hospital services and emergency room visits; and enable aging networks to have the capacity to deliver evidence-based programs.
Goals of Evidence-Based and Health Promotion shall:
-Maintain improved health
-Increase years of healthy life
-Reduce risk factors associated with illness, disability, or disease
-Delay onset of disease
-Minimize periods of disability
-Preserve functional capacity
-Manage chronic diseases
-Prevent premature institutionalization
The Council on Aging would like to invite and encourage senior adults age 60+ that reside in Dillon County to attend these classes.
There is no charge for the classes but donations are welcome and assist with the cost of the classes. This is a great way to make new friends, have some fun and improve your health. For more information on the classes call 843-774-0089.
