The Timmonsville Whirlwinds defeated the Latta Lady Vikings 52 to 41 in Latta on Monday, Feb. 22, to advance to the Lower State Championship in Florence on Saturday.
The 24 and 0 Whirlwinds ended The Vikings’  hope of returning for a 3-peat performance at the state championship in Class 1-A.
The opening tip-off was controlled by Latta who was playing without one (Mallory Townsend who was injured in an earlier game) of the usual starters.  However, Timmonsville’s #32 scored the first 2 points of the game.
The Vikings trailed by only 4 points after the first quarter 16 to 12 thanks, in part, to TaKeria Legette scoring ten.
The second quarter proved to be the downfall for Latta as Timmonsville’s Class A Player of the Year took control of the game.  Also, contributing to the great shooting for Timmonsville was Alaya Woods who connected on three 3-pointers in the second quarter. Let’s not forget to include Selena Legette who hit on the inside to start the lead for Timmonsville.
Timmonsville carried a 39 to 18 lead into halftime.
The Latta Vikings struggled in the third quarter to fall behind 50 to 28 before regaining their shooting abilities and closing the gap to 52 to 41 for the final.
Latta’s TaKeria Legette scored 22 points in the loss while Rianna Green connected for 13 points.  Cierra Sullivan added4 points and Arica Gandy hit for 2.
The Timmonsville Whilrlwinds were led in scoring by Alaya Woods with 17, Shania Wright with 14, Justice Gee with 13, and Selena Legette with 8.
The Latta Vikings season ended with 16 wins and 6 losses.
