Daughters of the American Revolution arrived at the Dillon Wellness Center for the first meeting of the season, got off to a good start on September 8, 2015 with newly elected Regent Chris Harris leading the pack. There were 16 present including one visitor. It is interesting to note that during its almost 100 years existence (chartered in 1916) with 17 members we now have 36 members in the Rebecca Pickens Chapter and more have their papers sent o National for review. Julie Sawyer was recognized as a new daughter.
Regent Harris led the members in the DAR Ritual, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the Salute to the flag of SC, the American Creed, Preamble and bell ringing. The 6th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was the right to a speedy trial and public trial for all criminal prosecutions was read.
The membership was notified of two new certificates awarded to the Chapter – a Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Chapter Computer Work to Rena Alford and Fay Sloan. Rosemary Bethea was applauded for her assistance in these achievements.
The other certificate was for Chapter Achievement Award Level I, the first time the Chapter has received this rating.
It was announced that the November meeting will be a commemoration event to honor our Vietnam veterans. More information will be forthcoming.
Joan Rocha, program chairman, informed the members that the speaker, Mr. Jerry Huggins, was unable to be present to present a program on flag etiquette as planned.
Regent Harris thanked all committee members reporting on their various activities and hostesses Patricia Townsend, Joan Rocha, and Polly McIntyre before adjourning the meeting.
