The Dillon Christian School Warriors traveled to Sumter Friday night and came away with a 33-14 win over the Generals of Thomas Sumter Academy. The win puts the Warriors at 2-1 on the season. The Warriors are playing several players on both sides of the ball and are short some key players due to transfers and injuries but seem to have found players to step into these spots. TeShaun Lane got the Warriors on the scoreboard late in the first quarter with a 46-yard touchdown run. Jackson Wolfe added the point after kick to put the Warriors up 7-0 with 1:40 left in the first quarter with the quarter ending with this score. Kelvin Stackhouse picked up the Warriors second touchdown on a 17-yard run with 6:55 left in the second quarter. The point after kick was blocked holding the Warrior lead to 13-0. With 1:20 left in the first half, Warrior quarterback Michael Minges hit Red Williams with a 15- yard touchdown pass. Wolfe’s kick increased the Warrior lead to 20-0 with the first half ending with this score. The Warriors opened the third quarter kicking off. The game announcer called it a pooch kick but it is not clear what the intent was. A pooch kick is supposed to travel low in the air for about 20 to 25 yards and then bounce on the ground near the up-backs. The Warriors’ kick traveled about ten yards in a pop-up fashion that was fielded easily by the front line giving the Generals the ball at mid field. The Generals took advantage of this good field position finishing the short drive with Dante Linder catching a 10- yard touchdown pass thrown by Ryan Dixon. Zack Fugate added the point after kick to cut the Warrior lead to 20-7. Anthony “Red” Williams fielded the General’s kick at the Warrior 29-yard line and returned it 71 yards. The touchdown was nullified due to a block in the back penalty that occurred nowhere near Williams run. It did not take the Warriors long to recover with Michael Minges hitting Tyreck Toomer with a 73-yard touchdown pass. Wolfe’s kick upped the Warrior lead to 27-7 with 9:09 left in the third quarter. The Warriors kicked off with the kick again traveling about ten yards into a lineman’s arms. In the past the Warriors have attempted more onside kicks than most teams with very little success but it is not clear what type of kick the Warriors were trying or if they were just muffed kicks. The Warrior defense stopped the Generals close to the Warrior goal line. The quarter would end with the 27-7 score. On the Warriors first possession of the fourth quarter, Minges finished the drive by hitting Jackson Wolfe with a 11 yard touchdown pass. The point after kick failed holding the Warrior lead to 33-7. With 1:22 left in the game, Dre Litsey ran through the Warrior defense 50 yards for a touchdown. Fugate’s kick cut the Warrior lead to 33-14. The Generals recovered the onside kick but the Warrior defense held securing the 33-14 win. On offense for the Warriors, Michael Minges was 5 of 10 passing for 117 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and had 96 yards rushing on 11 carries, TeShaun Lane had 140 yards rushing on 15 carries with a touchdown and caught one pass for 5 yards, Tyreck Toomer caught two passes for 76 yards and a touchdown and had 12 yards rushing on three carries, Jackson Wolfe caught two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown, Kelvin Stackhouse had 21 yards on three carries with a touchdown, Red Williams caught a 15 yard touchdown pass and Garret Collins had 9 yards on two carries. On Defense, Ethan Shackelford had 9 tackles with one assist and a fumble recovery, Garret Collins and Jake Boykin had 5 tackles with one assist each, TeShaun Lane had 3 tackles with a quarterback sack, an assist and a fumble recovery, David Williams had 3 tackles with an assist and a fumble recovery, Samuel Coleman had 3 tackles, Connor Hamilton and Hunter Tyner had two tackles with two assists each, Kelvin Stackhouse added a tackle with two assists, Red Williams and Tyreck Toomer added a tackle with an assist each with Williams getting an interception and Michael Minges and Nick Smith added a tackle assist. The Warriors will be at home this Friday hosting Trinity/Byrnes in a region 2-1A game with game time set for 7:30.
