Dillon’s Dixie Darlings and Dillon and Latta’s Dixie Angels are playing in state softball tournaments this week in Seneca, South Carolina.
The tournaments began Saturday, July 11, with the championships scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Dillon earned a trip to the 8 and under Dixie Darlings state tournament, which includes teams from Kershaw County, Westminster, Pelion, Aynor, Colleton County, Boiling Springs, and the host city, Seneca.
Dillon earned an 8-2 win over Kershaw County in the opening round on Saturday to advance. On Sunday, Dillon earned a 10-4 win, and on Monday, Dillon scored a 9-3 win.
Dillon was set to face Colleton County on Tuesday night but rain forced delays to the game. Play resumed on Wednesday as Dillon defeated Colleton 20-5 to advance to the state championship game.
Dillon’s Darlings were scheduled to take on Aynor for in the title game at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Aynor would have to beat Dillon twice to claim the title.
In the 10 and under Dixie Angels division, both Dillon and Latta advanced to the state playoffs. The tournament also includes Greer, Lancaster, Westminster, Moncks Corner, Bamberg, and host city Seneca.
On Saturday, Latta earned a 10-0 win over Lancaster in the first round while Dillon defeated Greer 13-0. On Sunday, Latta earned a win over Westminster, while Dillon shut out Bamberg 10-0 to advance.
On Monday, Latta took on Dillon for a hard fought 5-1 win. Dillon Coach Stevie Grice said it was an “extremely good game. Hats off to them.”
Dillon was scheduled to face Westminster in an elimination bracket game on Tuesday night and Latta was set to take on Lancaster, but the games were delayed due to the weather.
Play resumed on Wednesday morning with Dillon falling 3-0 to Westminster. But Latta earned a 10-1 win over Lancaster to advance to the state championship.
Latta was scheduled to face Westminster at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday for the state title. Westminster needed to win twice in order to claim the title.
The state champions will advance to the Dixie Softball World Series tournaments in Monroe, Louisiana beginning on Saturday, August 1.
UPDATE: Latta defeated Westminster 7-2 on Wednesday to claim the state title. The Latta Angels went undefeated in the tournament and will advance to the World Series in Monroe, Louisiana. Latta will open the World Series against the winning team from Tennessee.
After falling 5-4 in the first game, the Dillon Darlings earned a 4-2 win over Aynor in a second game to claim the state title. Dillon will also advance to the World Series in Monroe and will face the winning team from Mississippi.
