The Dillon Wildcats took some losses recently but earned an 11-2 win over Loris in varsity baseball action.
On Tuesday, March 31, the Wildcats fell 4-0 to the Waccamaw Warriors on the road.
Waccamaw’s Connor Eckard scored in the first inning after reaching on a walk, and Brady Gantt and Daniel Rourk both singled in the bottom of the second with Levi Almond scoring both on a double before coming in on a double from Will Golden.
Dillon reached third on two occasions, with Kaleb Page reaching on a single, advancing on an error, and stealing third in the second, and Patrick Herring hitting a double and advancing to third on a grounder in the sixth, but neither could reach home.
Tucker Perry picked up the win for the Warriors, pitching a complete game for four hits, one walk, one hit by pitch, and eight outs.
Austin Moody pitched four innings for the Wildcats for one hit, three walks, and five outs, and Blake Deese gave up six hits, four runs, three earned runs, and one walk with one out in two innings on the mound.
At bat for Dillon, John Mitchell Carter went 2-for-2; Patrick Herring went 1-for-3 with a double; and Kaleb Page went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Dillon had four hits and five errors in the effort.
For Waccamaw, Almond went 1-for-4 for a double with two RBI and one run; Gantt and Eckard were each 1-for-2 with one run; Golden and Ethan Chastain each went 1-for-2 with Golden hitting a double; Forest Powell went 1-for-3 with one RBI; and Rourk went 1-for-3 with one run scored. The Warriors had seven hits and one error in the win.
The Wildcats returned to action at Loris on Tuesday, April 7, for an 11-2 win over the Lions.
Dillon picked up two runners in the top of the second with Page hitting a double and Gunnar Grossetti hitting a single to reach and stealing second. The Wildcats picked up two more runners in the fourth with Grossetti hitting a single, stealing second and advancing on a grounder before scoring on an error. Carter drew a walk, stole second, and advanced on an error to put the Wildcats up 4-0.
Loris scored in the bottom of the fourth with Timmy Bell hitting a double and scoring as three Lions drew walks.
The Wildcats increased their lead with six runs in the fifth, with Herring and Page drawing walks and Grossetti and Joseph Scott getting hits. Rae Rae McGirt also got a single, but a fielder’s choice from Carter put McGirt out on the way to second. Omar McCollum reached on an error and a single from Callahan helped bring in the runners for a 10-1 lead.
Dillon capped the win with another run in the top of the seventh as McGirt singled, advanced on errors, and scored on one of three grounders that sent the Lions to bat. Loris added their only other run in the bottom of the inning with Dalton Stalvey drawing a walk and advancing on errors.
On the mound for the Wildcats, McGirt pitched 3.2 innings for two hits, one run, one earned run, seven walks, and one hit by pitch, striking out three. Callahan pitched two innings for one hit, one run, one walk, and three outs, and Austin Moody pitched 1.1 innings for two outs.
On the mound for Loris, Kolin Causey pitched 2.1 innings for two hits and one run; Neil Mincey pitched two innings for four hits, two runs, two earned runs, and one walk; and Guy Caines pitched 1.2 innings for four hits, eight runs, three earned runs, three walks, and two outs.
At bat for Loris, Timmy Bell went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored; Clay Faircloth went 1-for-3; Dalton Stalvey scored one run; Junior Long had one stolen base; and Zach Hudson picked up one RBI on a walk. Loris had three hits and three errors in the effort.
For Dillon, Grossetti went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases, and three runs scored; Deese went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run; Scott went 2-for-4 with one run; Herring went 2-for-3; Carter picked up three RBI and two runs with a stolen base with a fielder’s choice; Page went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs; Callahan went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a fielder’s choice hit; Omar McCollum scored one run; and Andrew Rowell scored one run with two stolen bases while running for Herring.
The Wildcats wrapped up the week with a 6-2 non-conference loss to East Clarendon on Thursday.
The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Dillon tied things up with a run in the top of the third. East Clarendon broke the tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, and picked up another in the sixth while holding the Wildcats to just one more run in the seventh for the 6-2 win.
Austin Moody took the loss for Dillon, while Ryan Knowlton got the win, pitching a complete game for six hits, two runs, and six outs.
At bat for Dillon, Scott and Herring each went 1-for-4 and Deese went 1-for-2. The Wildcats had six hits and seven errors in the effort.
For East Clarendon, Peyton Coker went 2-for-4 with a double and Kylan Lee went 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Wolverines had four hits and two errors in the win.
Dillon is 6-5 in the regular season and 5-1 in Region 8-2A heading into tonight’s game against Mullins. The Wildcats will host the Auctioneers at 6:30 p.m.
