Latta’s Lady Vikings downed Scott’s Branch 68-40 on Monday night in the first round of the Class A girls state basketball playoffs.

The Lady Vikings took a commanding 29-5 lead in the first period, and Scott’s Branch trailed 37-15 at the half. Latta kept up the pressure with a 17-6 third quarter, and a 19-14 rally from the Eagles in the fourth was too late to close the gap.

TaKeria Legette earned a game-high 18 points in the win and Mallory Townsend added 14 for the Vikings. Madelia Johnson scored 8 points; Iyonna McKenzie, 6; Margaret Desser, 6; Riana Green, 6; Cierra Sullivan, 4; Maya Wright, 3; Ke’asia Delrey, 2; Koesha James, 2; and TyKeria Manning, 2.

Scott’s Branch was led by Ashley Leonard with 17 points. Johnson added 8; Row, 2; Town, 2; and Thompson, 1.

The Latta ladies improve to 14-5 overall as they head into the second round of playoffs.

Latta will be on the road tonight at 7:00 p.m. in round two to take on Denmark-Olar. The Denmark-Olar Vikings finished first in Region 5-A and defeated Burke 54-27 on Monday night for a 15-9 record heading into Friday’s game. The D-O Vikings are led by Tyneka Sanders, averaging 11 points per game, and Jessica Davis, averaging 8.5. Faith Vice lead the team in rebounds, and also averages almost six points per game.

Elsewhere in the lower state bracket, Carvers Bay defeated C.E. Murray 76-28 to advance and Estill knocked off Charleston Charter. The Lady Bears will host Estill on Friday.

Green Sea-Floyds fell to Timmonsville 52-22, and the Whirlwinds will host Bamberg-Ehrhardt, who edged Baptist Hill 31-30 in the first round. Hemingway was also eliminated, falling 32-30 to Region 7-A champ Hannah-Pamplico. The Raiders will travel to face Cross, who knocked off Allendale-Fairfax 52-31.

In the upper state bracket, several games were delayed due to the weather, but Ridge Spring-Monetta, Lamar, C.A. Johnson, and Calhoun County all advanced in the first round.
