Latta’s Kel Williamson signed on to play football for United States Naval Academy at Annapolis on Wednesday.

Williamson has been playing since he was in fifth grade and says he was inspired by his father, Kelly Williamson, and Derrick Hamilton.

Williamson was named All-Region in his junior year and All-State in his senior year with the Vikings. He played as quarterback for Latta and also played as wide receiver. He is currently also playing basketball and track, and has played baseball and golf as well. In his down time, he also likes to hunt and fish.

He says he signed with Naval Academy because of the school’s history, the coaches, and their style of offense. He will be playing wide receiver for USNA.

Williamson said his most memorable play was during his senior year.

“The best plays are the ones that lead to the touchdowns,” he said. “We have succeeded with route running. My most memorable play during my senior year led to our beating Carvers Bay.”

Williamson said he plans to carry his work ethic to the college level, as well as his drive to be the best that he can be. He plans to major in engineering and to specialize in weapons and systems engineering.

His mother, Susan, and father, Latta’s head coach Kelly Williamson, said they were extremely proud of their son both on and off the field.

“He went to Annapolis camp in June and made a great showing,” Coach Williamson said. “He returned there in November for a football game and toured the facilities. The coaching staff feels he can do a great job and help them on the receiving team.”
