The Latta Vikings earned a 63-56 win over the visiting East Clarendon Wolverines on Thursday, and Tyriek McAllister made a last second layup to boost Latta to a 76-75 win over Mullins on Friday night in varsity basketball action.
Latta took a 13-7 lead over East Clarendon in the first period on Thursday night at home in Latta, and held off the Wolverines with a 22-21 second to lead 35-28 at the half. The Wolverines rallied in the third to outscore Latta 16-12 to close the gap to 47-44, but the Vikings used a 16-12 fourth quarter to end the threat.
Tyriek McAllister lead the Vikings with a team-high 13 points, with Tyquan Porter and Kartilus McFadden each adding 11 and Jordan Sims earning 10. Diez Mungro scored eight points; Eric McGirt, 3; J. Hall, 2; and Davonta Porter, 2.
Trayon Benjamin earned a game-high 22 points and Jabari Rose added 12 to lead East Clarendon in the effort. C. White earned six points; J. Burgess, 5; K. Hughes, 4; and M. Burgess, 3.
On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Mullins for a tough game against the Auctioneers, taking home a hard-fought 76-75 victory.
Mullins took a 22-19 lead in the first quarter and the Vikings earned just one point more than the Auctioneers in the second, going 17-16 to trail 38-36 at the half. Mullins widened the gap once more in the third, outscoring Latta 22-19 to carry a 60-55 lead into the final quarter. But the Vikings pushed hard to outscore Mullins 21-15, with Tyreik McAllister earning the game-winning points on a layup with 1.6 seconds left on the clock.
Kartilus McFadden earned a team-high 22 points with Tyquan Porter adding 18 and Jordan Sims earning 16. Tyreik McAllister finished with seven points; Eric McGirt, 5; Chakeem Blake, 2; Diez Mungro, 2; and Davonta Porter, 2.
Javarius Smith scored a game-high 26 points to lead Mullins and Jalek Felton added 24 in the effort. Ephriam Utley added 10; Powell, 8; Platt 3; D. Davis, 2; and Graham, 2.
Latta improved to 3-2 overall with the wins.
The Vikings will be on the road this Thursday, December 18, to face Marion in their last game before the holiday break.
