Dillon’s Kiwanis Dixie Youth Majors defeated Lake Marion 8-1 at Freedom Florence on Friday to claim the 2014 Dixie Youth Majors State Championship title.
Dillon held a 4-0 lead after four innings, but Lake Marion got on the scoreboard with a double and an RBI. In the top of the sixth, Dillon’s Jared Ivey hit one up the middle, picking up three RBI and reaching third. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jared Darmon was hit by pitch to push through Dillon’s last run for the 8-1 win.
“This is our third championship,” Lonnie Turner, Kiwanis secretary, said. “To see them play every day, you don’t know who will step up to be the hero. Like today, Noah Carter made a great defensive play. We knew this was a good team going into the season. I’m real proud of these boys and the coaches. They’ve put in a lot of time and work and that’s what it’s all about.”
Kiwanis President Darryl Miller added that “It’s been a long time coming.”
“They have worked their butts off and it was a complete team effort,” he said. “I’m so proud I can’t stand it!”
The Dillon Kiwanis Majors received a police escort as they returned to Dillon with the state championship flag and trophy.
