A grand slam for Dillon’s Weston Bailey helped lift Florence Post 1 to a 16-6 run-rule win over Murrells Inlet Post 178 on Thursday night in American Legion baseball.
Murrells Inlet made a second inning rally to take a 4-0 lead, but Bailey’s grand slam came in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 4-4 with two outs. With two batters on base, Logan McRae hit one to the left to put Florence up 6-4, and in the third, Ke’Shaun Samuel picked up a runner on a single for a 7-4 lead.
Murrells Inlet scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth and on a single in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6, but Post 1 pitcher Kam Dixon kept Post 178 at bay for the rest of the game. Florence picked up four runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to help seal the win.
Alex Dorriety earned the win on the mound for Florence, pitching three innings of relief with two hits and one run. Dixon struck out six in three innings. Jack Kearney took the loss for Murrells Inlet with six runs and three hits in two innings.
On Saturday, Post 1 defeated Whiteville, NC, 11-2 in the first game of the North Carolina-South Carolina Legion Challenge, but Wilmington earned three runs in the sixth inning for a 3-2 win over Post 1 in the second game.
Patrick Lovelace got the win for Florence against Whiteville, pitching four innings for three hits, two runs, three walks, and three outs.
Dillon’s Patrick Herring went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI. Zach Herndon went 3-for-4 with three RBI; McRae went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI; and Steven Calcutt was 1-for-3.
Florence Post 1 was scheduled to play against Wilson on Sunday to finish up the tournament.
