Timmonsville fell to Hunter-Kinard-Tyler and Carvers Bay fell to Christ Church in the Class A state championship games on Friday, November 29.
In the Class A, Division I state title game, Christ Church earned a 28-21 win over Carvers Bay to claim the championship. Both teams put 14 points on the board in the first quarter, but the Christ Church Cavaliers pulled ahead of the Bears in the second, outscoring them 14-7 for a 28-21 lead at the half. Neither team would score in the second half to allow the Cavs to preserve the win.
This is the third state title in a row for the Cavaliers; Christ Church won the Class A, Division II title in 2011 with a 35-14 win over Lake View and the Class A, Division I title in 2012 with a 27-18 win over Johnsonville.
The Cavaliers finished the season with an undefeated 14-0 record while Carver’s Bay finished 12-2.
In Class A, Division II, the Hunter-Kinard-Tyler Trojans defeated the Timmonsville Whirlwinds 26-8 for the state title. The Trojans took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and added six points in the second for a 20-0 lead at the half. Neither team scored in the third, but the Whirlwinds finally got on the board at the start of the fourth quarter when Tyquez Young scored on a 1-yard run. Jalen Moore scored the conversion on a pass from Tamaric Jones to leave Timmonsville trailing 20-8. With 1:24 left in the game, the Trojans scored again to seal the win at 26-8.
Jarius Jenkins scored all four touchdowns for Hunter-Kinard-Tyler, carrying 22 times for 213 yards for a season total of 2,015 yards. Young carried 25 times for 80 yards to lead the Timmonsville offense, and Jones completed 12 of 22 passes for 161 yards.
Timmonsville finished the season 7-7 while Hunter-Kinard-Tyler finished 12-2.
Elsewhere on Friday, teams were vying for lower and upper state titles across the state. In Class AA, Division I, Dillon shut out Timberland 14-0 for the lower state title while Fairfield-Central defeated Cheraw 37-13 in the upper state. The two teams will meet for the state title this Friday, December 6, at 8:30 p.m. at Benedict College in Columbia.
In Class AA, Division II, Silver Bluff defeated Bamberg-Ehrhardt 14-7 in the lower state, while Batesburg-Leesville defeated Chesnee 34-33 for the upper state title. The state championship will be Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Benedict.
In Class AAA, Daniel defeated Chapman 29-27 for the upper state title, and Myrtle Beach defeated Marlboro County 20-6 in the lower state. The state championship will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 3:00 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.
In Class 4A, Division I action, Dutch Fork defeated Byrnes 31-21 in the upstate, while Sumter edged Summerville 28-27 for the lower state title. The state title will be decided on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium.
And finally, in Class 4A, Division II, Stratford defeated South Pointe 36-13 for the upper state title and Northwestern took down North Augusta 49-21 in the lower state. The two teams will meet at noon on Saturday at Williams-Brice.
