The Dillon Wildcats lost their regular season opener against South Florence on Tuesday night in high school baseball action.
The 4A Bruins scored in every inning, getting two runs in the first to take a 2-1 lead over the Wildcats. South Florence added three runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to lead 8-1 going into the fifth. The Wildcats managed four runs there, but South Florence added seven to take a 15-5 win after five innings.
Jackson Purvis led the Bruins with a grand slam, going 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Garrett Bevil went 2-for-3 with a double and Steven Calcutt went 2-for-2 for South Florence with a double and three RBIs.
Josh Altman was the winning pitcher for the Bruins, going four innings and allowing five hits, one earned run, and three walks, striking out five.
Dillon’s Kyle Britt led the Wildcats at bat, going 2-for-3. Daniel Huggins took the loss, pitching three innings with six hits, five earned runs, and three walks. He struck out three.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Tuesday, March 13, when they host Marion at 6:30 p.m. to open region play.
