Alexander J. Stoops, Jr. was recognized at the 2011 South Carolina United Methodist Annual Conference held in Florence June 8th through 13th, 2011.
Stoops was among nine college students participating in the Student in Mission program conducted each summer by the United Methodist Church.
The program proposes to expose young adults to the mission of the church by encouraging and developing vocational discernment of young adults in authentic mission sites with in the Palmetto State and elsewhere.
Students will assist the church in carrying out specialized functions that help develop new ministries, foster outreach and through these young people help make the church more aware of mission needs in South Carolina.
This year’s program sends United Methodists to Camp Providence in Anderson SC, Rural Missions, Inc. in John’s Island SC, and Metropolitan Community UMC & UM Seminar Program in New York, NY.
Among those presented to Bishop Taylor and the United Methodist Conference with Stoops, were Sara Reynolds who represented Furman University, Angela Rice Clemson University, Jessica Simon Claflin University, Nik Miller, Holly Taylor and Jon Hoin, Winthrop University. Alexis Stratton represented The University of South Carolina. Also participating was Rachel Sherron who represented Campbellsville University.
Stoops will be serving Camp Providence in Anderson, South Carolina. He is a rising 2nd Class (Junior) student at The Citadel, a member of Latta United Methodist Church and the son of Mr. & Mrs. Alexander J. Stoops, Jr. of Latta.
