The Dillon County Relay For Life was held on May 20-21 at Dillon Christian School.
As of 6 a.m. Saturday, approximately $50,000 had been raised.
A large crowd turned out for the event. There was plenty of food and fun for all in attendance.
Highlights included the Survivors’ Lap and luminary service. Around 600 luminaries were lit for the luminary service.
Campsites were decorated in a theme reflecting the theme of “Fighting Cancer Across the United States of America.”
Sixteen teams participated with 11 staying all night. Survivor Dwight Bedinger led the first lap and the last lap of the relay.
Co-chair Faith Mew said, “The location was a huge success, especially for it being the first year at that location. All of the staff at Dillon Christian School went out of their way to accommodate. We had many positive comments from the teams and the community about the location. We appreciate the board allowing us to hold the Relay there.”
“A very special thank you goes out to Christian Wolfe, DCS Athletic Director who offered help wherever needed, and allowed us to ‘camp-out’ on the football field,” said Mew.
“Bobby Meekins was the emcee this year. It was his first time doing this for us and he did a great job. He’s got the attitude and energy that you need to take you through the night. Not only was he perfect for the games, late night activities and announcements, he jumped in and helped wherever he was needed,” said Mew. “Over the past few years, with the economy and other factors, we’ve seen a drop in interest and/or participation in the Relay.”
The community seemed much more enthusiastic about Relay this year. Thank you to anyone who participated in any way,” Mew said.
