After defeating Lake View 2-1 over the weekend, East Clarendon was stopped dead in its tracks by Latta’s Lady Vikings who battled the Wolverines to a 1-0 win on Monday, May 9.
The only score of the game came in the third inning. Latta’s Mikenzi Caniglia led the inning off with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Allison Moody to move Caniglia to second. The East Clarendon short stop fielded a ground ball from Charise Braddy and threw to first, allowing Caniglia to advance for the score as the first baseman missed the throw. Latta had a total of five hits in the win.
East Clarendon had only two hits, one of which was a lead off triple in the seventh, but the Wolverines were stopped by a pop up to second, a line drive catch to third, and a grounder to second to end the inning.
Anna Rogers earned the win, pitching a complete game with only two hits. She struck out eight and allowed no walks or runs. Kaitlin Alexander took the loss for East Clarendon.
At bat, Charise Braddy went 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base, and an RBI, while Mikenzi Caniglia went 2-for-3 with the game’s only run. Chelsea Welty went 1-for-3 for Latta.
Latta’s overall record improved to 21-7 with the win.
Latta advances to the Lower State title bout, which the Vikings will host on Friday, May 13. The Lady Vikings will be facing the winner of Wednesday’s game between Lake View and East Clarendon.
