On November 4, 2010, a banquet honoring William and Ammie Carmichael was held at Charity Tabernacle Baptist Church in Dillon to recognize them as the Adoptive Family of the Year.
The Department of Social Services considers adoption for children in foster care who are unable to return home or to be placed with relatives.
In an effort to further promote and protect the welfare of South Carolina’s children, the agency is constantly in search of families who have the capacity to cope with children’s individual special needs and the ability to open their hearts and homes to the many children deserving of a permanent forever family.
In celebration of National Adoption Month, each of the department’s four regional adoption offices has recognized a special family as the Adoptive Family of the Year.  William and Ammie Carmichael were chosen among one hundred other families throughout Region IV Adoption’s twelve counties.  They received placement of a four year old little girl they call Ranzi on October 12, 2007, who is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and had severe developmental delays.  At the time of Ranzi’s placement, she had no mobility and could not speak.  After only a short time with the love and attention offered by Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael, she was crawling, beginning to stand, saying several words, and at times, communicating very effectively.  Ranzi, now seven years old, needs frequent and on going medical care and therapy which can be very demanding for her family. Nevertheless, Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael love Ranzi as if she were their own biological daughter. On July 15, 2010, Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael’s adoption of Ranzi was finalized.
Their adoption caseworker, Shirley Manning, stated “Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael’s unwavering willingness and profound affection is a testimony to the love and care Ranzi is already receiving and what is to come.”
The family continues to face challenges while rearing Ranzi, some of which were a given, while others were unexpected.  However, Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael are dedicated to being the best parents they can be to a child who deserves nothing less.
