Dillon Provision Company purchased this cheese for their largest customer and shipped it to Orangeburg on October 29th. Reid’s Food Store in Orangeburg will uncrate this cheese, which is believed to be the largest single piece of Wisconsin Cheese ever delivered in either North or South Carolina— a Mammoth Cheese weighing 5,244 lbs. It will be available for customer purchases after the uncrating (in smaller portion – of course!). A Mammoth Cheese can range from 75 pounds to a rare 5,000 pounds. The Mammoth Cheese that the Orangeburg Reid’s Food Store is receiving took 52,440 pounds of milk to make – or 6,100 gallons of milk – or 97,600 glasses of milk. Other interesting facts about Reid’s Mammoth Cheese: A dairy cow produces approximately 52 pounds of milk per day – therefore, it took over 1,000 cows one day’s production to make this Mammoth cheese. Americans eat about 30 pounds of Cheese per year – it would take 21,000 people eating 4 oz. of cheese to completely consume Reid’s Mammoth Cheese. A 5,244 pound Mammoth Cheese is a rare event in any place in the USA, and Dan Bozard, Dillon Provision Co., Inc., shown at top with the giant cheese, said it was “a rare event in our business.” (Contributed Photo)
