A Single Sight

Christmas 2010 is over, but there are memories of sights and sounds of the holiday, mostly sights still freshly recalled. And there was one sight that was most memorable although it was a somewhat private sight, a most unlikely one to remember except to a few including me.

Tiger-I-Tis

I hardly ever identify the main character in my columns although it takes little imagination to figure out in this one just who is the suspect. This column is no exception, likewise nameless is the subject.

Toy Catalogs

Today included in my copy of the HERALD, I received my first toy ‘catalog’ of the season, a promotion of a national chain whose store is located locally. It is not for older readers, however, since so many of the items included are known only to the current generation; most of the so called electronic items are bewildering to the eyes of the ancients or near-so.

Sweet Justice

How many times have you been in a traffic situation, say driving south on US 301 entering Latta’s well marked school zone when this speeding vehicle passes you in a blur, absolutely oblivious of the overhead blinking lights and the impossible-to-miss signs warning of the school’s speed limit zone?

Granny

You have undoubtedly heard the saying that God‘s angels could not be everywhere to respond to a believer’s need so who was sent? Mothers. A mother’s love is generally #1 on any list, but we all know who comes in a close second: Granny. This is a story that proves when all else fails, call Granny.

Grilled Cheese

My wife and I did not travel extensively, but when we did it was mostly in the two Carolinas and especially in the western part of North Carolina. We loved the mountains and visited often the Boone/Blue Ridge Parkway area. During our travels we also enjoyed trying out new places for dining. We were not sophisticated gourmands by any means.

Composition 101

I suspect that there is the rare person who decides early (grade school, high school?) that he wants to be a writer. That is not to say that there are not such vocational avenues that are decided early.
