Citizens may or may not realize that Dillon County pays rent and utilities on four buildings to accommodate some offices for which they must provide space.
With the new Dillon County Justice Center basically complete and several offices in the process of moving or soon to move there, a great deal of office space will be freed in county-owned buildings.
This is great news for Dillon County taxpayers. There will no longer be a need to continue renting office space with plenty of available county space. Thousands will be saved.
Consider what is being paid at this time:
—An office for the Family Court Judge: $18,708 paid yearly (This includes rent, cleaning services, pest control, electricity, and water.)
—An office for Probation and Parole: $11,237 paid yearly (This includes rent, gas, electricity, and water).
—An office for the Sheriff’s investigators: $17,296 paid yearly (This includes rent, gas, electricity, and water).
—An office for the Sheriff’s Violent Crime Task Force: $18,082 paid yearly (This includes rent, electricity, and water).
The grand total is $65,323.
This will be a big savings to taxpayers if the Dillon County Council chooses to move these offices into spaces they already own.
It would be difficult to imagine that all council members would not vote to move out of rented spaces to county-owned offices. Who would continue to pay $65,323 in rent, utilities, etc. when they didn’t have to and these funds could be used for other things? After all, aren’t our county council members supposed to be the conservators of the taxpayer’s money?
