The Latta Vikings boys and girls basketball teams were on the road at Carvers Bay on Tuesday night as the Bears upset both teams in Region 8-A action.
In girls basketball, the Lady Bears defeated the Lady Vikings 63-42 to tie both teams at 8-1 in Region 8-A.
Carvers Bay jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, but Latta outpaced the Bears 9-8 in the second to trail 23-18 at the half. But the Lady Bears dominated the third period 25-10 to carry a 48-28 lead into the fourth quarter, where they held off the Vikings 15-14 to seal the win.
The Bears were led by Desaree Green with a game-high 21 points and Allegria Reed with 14. Green also grabbed 20 rebounds with two steals and an assist in the win. Quantaisha Robinson added 12 points in the win; Anatashia Brommell, 8; LaQuasha Coles, 4; Taleaa Adams, 2; and Jada Walker, 2. Bromell also picked up 12 rebounds for the Bears; Coles made three assists; and Robinson made three steals.
Latta was led by Maya Wright with a team-high 14 points and TaKeria Legette with 13. Mallory Townsend added 8 points; Riana Green, 5; and Margaret Desser, 2.
The win ties the Bears and Vikings at 8-1 in Region 8-A. Latta is 13-4 overall and Carvers Bay is 12-2.
The Bears are scheduled to host Lake View tonight, and Latta will be away at Hemingway, which is ranked third in the region with a 7-2 record.
The Class A girls basketball playoffs are set to begin on Monday, February 16, at 7:00 p.m. with the top teams from each region hosting.
BOYS
In boys action, Latta fell 70-65 to the Bears, dropping the Vikings to 8-1 in Region 8-A.
The Bears were led by Arkel Williams with 22 points while Latta’s Jordan Sims earned a team-high 20 for the Vikings.
Latta slipped to 12-5 and 8-1 as the Bears snapped a 9-game winning streak. Carvers Bay improved to 12-10 overall and 6-3 in the region.
The Vikings have already claimed the region title and will host their first round playoff game against Region 7-A’s fourth place team. Carvers Bay and Hemingway are both 6-3 heading into the final game of the regular season, and Green Sea Floyds is fourth in the region with a 3-6 record.
The Class A boys basketball playoffs are set to begin on Tuesday, February 17, at 7:00 p.m.
UPDATE: The Hemingway Tigers upset both Latta Vikings teams on Thursday, with the Lady Tigers defeating Latta 54-50 in girls action and the Vikings falling 80-77 in boys action. The Latta boys already claimed the Region 8-A title and will host a first round playoff game against Region 7-A’s fourth place finisher on Tuesday night. The Lady Vikings will host a first round Class A playoffs game while Hemingway will be on the road at Hannah-Pamplico.
