The Dillon Wildcats used another way to upend the Marlboro County Bulldogs, 36-21, Friday night in Bennettsville. Most of the game was pretty ugly from the standpoint of penalties, but defensively, the Cats were awesome.
Daeshawn Davis had a career night at his linebacker position, picking off a London Johnson pass and returning it for a 57-yard touchdown in the second quarter and being in the right place at the right time in the third quarter, scooping up a fumble and returning it 39 yards for another score. The 5’8, 196 pound junior also made four solo tackles and recorded an assist. If that wasn’t enough, just 30 seconds from the end of the first quarter, he was called on to run the football and scored from three yards out to give the Wildcats a 10-7 lead.
Also getting in on the defensive stats were Randal Davis and Zach Wilson with interceptions. Davis picked off a Johnson pass and returned it 54 yards to set up a touchdown and Wilson’s 20-yard interception with 2:49 left in the game resulted in Jamison Chapman’s three-yard run for the final score of the evening.
Quarterback Avery McCall completed nine of 16 passes for 147 yards, while Marlboro’s London Johnson completed 19 of 30 for 237 with three interceptions.
McCall also carried seven times for 57 yards; Chapman carried 10 times for 42; and Johnny Allen carried eight times for nine yards.
Eri’Reon Hayes caught five passes for 96 yards receiving, and Allen caught two for 21, with Davis catching one for 24 yards. For Marlboro, Tabari Hines caught six passes for 83 yards; Myrone Williams caught three for 20; and Alonte Littles caught eight for 93.
Marlboro earned more total yards of offense but 16 penalties and five turnovers hurt the Bulldogs cause as Dillon improved to 5-0 on the season and earned their 14th consecutive win. Marlboro is now 1-4.
Dillon will be on the road this Friday to face the Aynor Blue Jackets on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to open up region play. Aynor is 3-2 heading into the game.
