On Thursday, August 28, Dillon County Parks and Recreation hosted the annual softball game with the Dillon and Marion County Disabilities and Special Needs groups. There was a total of 220 people for the get together.

Executive Director Mike Keith, Dillon director Cynthia Breeden, and Marion director Donna Hinton worked with Dillon County Parks and Recreation Director Vernon Grimsley and his assistant, Larry German, to organize the event. Martha German was umpire and Tonya Page volunteered.

It was a hot day but that didn’t keep the groups from cheering for their teams. Dillon was up by one run when Marion came up for their final at bat. Marion scored three runs to 8-6.

“These men and women had a great time. The joy on their faces was priceless,” Grimsley said. “I overheard one saying that he was going to knock the ball in the trees across the road. I also loved the enthusiasm when they may have have struck out or made out. They would still do a high five or chest bump. The groups were already talking about playing next year.”

After the game, Dillon County Parks and Recreation sponsored a dinner for both teams. Shannon and Florine Graves cooked.

“It’s such an honor to host this game every year,” Grimsley said. “I urge everyone to come out next year to watch these teams play!”
