It was reported at a recently Dillon City Council meeting that the EPA is unofficially closing the project at Rownd & Sons.
According to a letter received by the city from the EPA, the following summarizes the action that was taken:
—”Removed all friable asbestos from the entire site, from all piping and the boilers in the back. There is still some asbestos-containing material in the dryers in the large building, but it is contained within the dryers and presents no threat of release until someone tears the building down.”
—”Removed 2-4 feet of PCB-contaminated soil from the areas behind the old assembly building. the building itself was taken down in order to get at the contamination which migrated under the building. The impacted concrete was removed as well. The excavation was backfilled with clean soil. There is contamination above both the TSCA limits and our exposure limits for industrial settings at the 2-foot level, but we feel that any future use of the site will not require excavation beyond the 2-foot level. Thus, the site should be okay for nearly any future use we can envision. I am talking to our lawyer now about placing a deed restriction on the property which will convey this information to any future prospective purchasers.”
—”Removed all the small containers of hazardous materials and the petroleum products from the site.”
When everything has been finalized, the final report will be posted at http://www.epaosc. org/site/site_profile.aspx?site_id=8104.
