The Dillon Police Department has warrants on a North Myrtle Beach man who allegedly scammed three elderly people in Dillon for a total of $45,000 on May 28-29.
The suspect is identified as Tommy Clack, age 38, 1008 Ridgewood Drive, North Myrtle Beach.
In the first incident, the suspect told the victim that he had some asphalt that he could lay in the victim’s driveway for a reasonable price of $12,000. The victim told the suspect that they didn’t have that kind of money. He said they could work something out and then left. The victim said that the next thing she knew a crew was outside of the residence doing work in her driveway. The victim told the crew that there was no agreement for them to pave the driveway, but they kept on working. When the work was finished, the suspect showed up and said she owed him $12,000. She said she was sorry that he did the work, but she didn’t have $12,000. He totaled up a bill for $9,500 and then went down to $8,500. She wrote him a check for $8,500. The victim later tried to contact the suspect because the paving was holding water and was not running off, but could not contact him.
In a second incident, the suspect came to a residence stating he had some leftover concrete and could pave her driveway at a reasonable price. She asked him how much it would be, and the suspect told the victim not to worry about it that he would treat her right. He poured the asphalt without an agreement. When he completed the job, he totaled up a bill for $25,500. The victim said she almost fainted when he told her the price, but she wrote him a check and paid him because she had seen all of the equipment and thought that it belonged to the city. A second check she had written for $4,000 was cancelled in time making the amount of money he allegedly got $18,500.
Sgt. James Hayes, who is investigating the cases, located a third victim when he was riding around the neighborhood looking for freshly paved asphalt. He located a home and asked the victim who paved her driveway. She said that two guys came by her residence and said that their boss was doing a job around the corner and had some left over concrete and would like to pour it in her driveway. She said yes because she thought it was for free. The crew paved the driveway and the suspect came and gave her a bill for $18,000. She didn’t know what to do so she wrote him a check for $18,000.
A warrant has been signed for breach of trust over $5,000 and for two counts of breach of trust over $10,000.
Clack recently pled guilty in a Florence General Sessions Court to one felony count of obtaining goods under false pretenses ($5,000 or more) and three misdemeanor counts of swindling. He received a sentence of 10 years suspended to five years probation and restitution. The amount of the restitution is $80,500. There were four victims related to these charges.
