Hubert Carrol Porter, 72, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 23, at Richardson Funeral Home.
Mr. Porter was born in Marion, a son of the late Luther Porter, Sr. and Mary Jackson Porter. He is also predeceased by his son, Marion Hubert Porter (Rachel King); brothers, Hayward Porter, Norman Porter, Horace Porter, Luther Porter, Jr., and Elliott C. Porter (Faye); and sister, Mary Porter Cox (Lonnie).
Mr. Porter was the founder and owner of Pee Dee Skateland for over 41 years. He was an avid tree farmer, winning District 8 Outstanding Tree Farmer of the year in 1997 and 2001, Woodmen of the World Conservation Award Recipient in 1996, and Stewardship Forest Owner Award in 2005. Mr. Porter previously served on Marion/Dillon Development Board, Pee Dee Land Owner’s Association, Marion County Election Commission, and Marco Rural Water Company Board. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kay Page Porter, of the home; sisters, Murielene Porter Caulder (Ansel), Muriel Porter Pridgen (Donnie) and Mildred Porter Gowdy (Johnny); special friends, Dickie Sherman, Betty Jo Perritt, and Lisa Kaye Hilbourne; Godchild, Rachel Kaye Hilbourne; and many nieces and nephews.
