Gilbert Page Townsend, 80, died at the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, SC, Monday, February 6, 2012. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Kannaday Funeral Home Chapel in Dillon, SC with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon.
Mr. Townsend was born in Dillon, SC, August 21, 1931 the son of the late A. E. and Christine Stone Townsend. He was a member of Free State Independent Church. He was a retired engineer with the South Carolina Highway Department. He enjoyed building boats in his retirement. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, a Life Member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and a dedicated member of the Harllee Guard (Mortar Crew). At one time Mr. Townsend had four generations of his family as members of the SCV.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha Campell Towsend of the home; a son, Gilbert Page (Debbie) Townsend, Jr. of Latta, SC; Daughter-in-law, Jimmie Faye Townsend of Latta, SC; brothers, Jerry (Jean) Townsend of Midway Park, NC, Larry (Imogene) Townsend of Trinity, NC, and Branford (Pat) Townsend of Dillon, SC; a sister, Mary T. Taylor of Stantonburg, NC; four grandchildren, Kristen Roberts, Matthew, Joshua, and Kayla Townsend; three great grandchildren, Chaise, Landon, and Holden Roberts.
Mr. Townsend was predeceased by his sons, James Kelly Townsend and Alphonso “Al” Townsend, and a grandson-in-law, Terry Roberts.
