Latta’s boys and girls basketball teams both fell to Mullins on Friday with the Vikings falling 79-47 to the Auctioneers and the Lady Vikings falling 61-50.
The Vikings fell behind in the first period as Mullins outscored Latta 24-11 to start the game. Each team added 17 points in the second period, allowing Mullins to carry the 13 point lead into half-time. The Auctioneers added 17 points in the third and 21 in the fourth to secure the 79-47 win. Latta added 11 in the third and eight in the fourth.
Darnell Coleman led Mullins with a game-high 26 points, and Chris Harley added 22 to the win with six three-pointers. Jonathan Jenkins added eight; Tyre Constance, six; Alex Brown, five; Bernard Jones, three; Joseph Ceo and Earnell Legette added two each; and Rembert Timmons and Keivonte Waters added one each.
Donell Stanley led the Vikings with a team-high 22 points. DJ Legette earned eight points, and Rajit McFadden and Tyrell Sabb each added seven. Travis Kinney added two, and Nequan Williams scored one point in the loss.
The Vikings fall to 0-2 so far this season.
The Lady Vikings also had their hands full with the Lady Auctioneers. Mullins outscored Latta 12-10 in the first and both added 17 points in the second for a two-point Mullins lead in the first. Mullins outscored Latta by one point in the third, going 16-15 for a three-point lead headed into the fourth. But the Lady Auctioneers rallied to outscore Latta 15-8 in the fourth to give them the 61-50 win.
Mullins was led by Brittany Rowell with a game-high 21 points. Neisha Godfrey added 14 and Jeleah Lesane added 12, with Cassie Phillips scoring five, Brittany McDonald earning four, and Brianna Bentley adding two points in the win.
Tianna DeBerry led the Lady Vikings with a team-high 20 points. Brittany Burgess added 11, with Takeria Leggette earning eight and Jessica Evans scoring seven. Courtney McCullough and Kierra Johnson each scored two points in the loss.
The Lady Auctioneers improved to 1-1 while Latta fell to 0-2 overall in Region 8A.
Both Latta teams are scheduled to travel to Marion tonight at 6:00 p.m. for their second meeting with the Swamp Foxes this season.
Latta will be back at home on Friday to host Mullins in another non-region game before opening region play on Tuesday, December 13, when they travel to face Hemingway.
