Memorial service for John Robert “Johnnie” Jordan, 71, will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2011, at Shandon United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at the residence. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Jordan died Thursday, September 1, 2011. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Barnie Allen Jordan Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Jones Jordan. He loved the beach, and most importantly, swimming with his grandchildren. A strong supporter of youth sports, he always sponsored Dixie League baseball teams, on which two of his grandsons competed. He was a graduate of Dreher High School and the University of S.C., where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and served as Vice-President. During his studies at U.S.C., his Air National Guard unit was deployed during the Berlin Crisis and he was stationed at Chaumant Air Base, France.
Mr. Jordan was owner and President of Cherokee Inc. Contractors. A member of American General Contractors (A.G.C.), he served on their Legislative Council and was a member of American Road Builders. He also served on the Administrative Board of Shandon UMC where he was a very faithful church member. Prior to moving to Shandon, he was a member of Lebanon UMC, where he served in many capacities, including chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, Building Committee and served on the Administrative Board. He also served two terms on the Board of Trustees at Richland Memorial Hospital, four years on Richland Medical Foundation and was appointed by Gov. Hodges to serve on the S.C. Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper Board) and served on the S.C. Economic Development Board.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Kay Rogers Jordan of the home; daughter, Cecily Jordan Cobb (Drue) of Charlotte; son, John Robert Jordan Jr. (Lynsey) of Columbia; grandchildren, Chloe Caroline Cobb, Lily Katherine Cobb, Hudson Drue Cobb, Dalton Trayce Jordan, Barnes Robert Jordan; sister, Barbara Alford of Eastover; brother, David Neil Jordan of Columbia; mother-in-law, Jimmie R. Rogers of Lake View, S.C.. He was predeceased by a brother, Barnie A. “Bubba” Jordan III.
