Florence’s Post 1 claimed it’s fourth state title in five seasons when they defeated Socastee on Wednesday, July 20, in the junior Legion state tournament.

Post 1 lost to Socastee on Monday and had to battle their way back for the championship, beating Union 15-6 on Wednesday to earn their chance at the title.

In the championship game, they defeated Socastee 11-1. Florence kept a 2-1 lead through most the game, but earned nine runs in the sixth to claim a run-ruled win and the state title.

Andrew Stanley was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run on three hits for his second win of the tournament.

Stanley was named Most Outstanding Pitcher and Zach Herndon was named tournament MVP. Socastee’s Hunter Renfrow earned the Sportsmanship Award.

Florence’s Post 1 senior team headed to the Legion state tournament over the weekend, getting off to a good start with a 13-8 win over Greenwood on Saturday.

The Post 1 team is no stranger to the state tournament, having made seven trips to the tournament in a row, but has not won the state title in almost 70 years.

On Sunday, Post 1 fell 10-2 to Gaffney. The game began at Charleston Southern University but was delayed by the weather and finished at Goose Creek High School.

Florence was scheduled to face Greenville on Monday in an elimination game.
