James Preston Campbell, 63, died of natural causes, in Columbia, SC, June 13, 2011. Memorial services will be held 10:00 A.M. graveside at the Pee Dee Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pee Dee Church Road, Dillon, SC, Saturday June 25, 2011. Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon, SC is assisting the family.
Mr. Campbell was born in Orangeburg, SC, the son of the late James and Cordelia Campbell.
A graduate of Lake View High School, Preston received a B. S. Degree in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University and a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida. He started his career at the South Carolina Board of Heath in 1970. He began working as an enviromental engineering associate in the Bureau of Air Quality.
He was responsible for the evaluation of pollution sources and related control devices and systems. He joined the Bureau of Land and Waste Management in 1992, where he worked until his retirement in 2009. His work there included several hazardous waste cleanup projects, and he rounded out his career working on the cleanup of the Savannah River Site. He is survived by his brother, William Alexander Campbell of Rockville, MD.
