The First Annual Health Promotion Conference 2023 sponsored by Manning Baptist Church “Soup for the Soul” Community Outreach Ministry and Community Partners took place on November 4, 2023 at the Dillon Wellness Center.
The purpose of the conference is to promote the health, safety, quality of life and reduce health disparities in the Dillon County community for future generations.
The conference honored the legacy of Sheriff Douglas “Humbunny” Pernell for his dedication, commitment, and service to the Dillon County community.
The late Sheriff Douglas Pernell received the “LEGACY” Award 2023. Sheriff Douglas Pernell’s wife, Mrs. Cynthia Pernell, received the award on his behalf. The committee will continue to honor Sheriff Douglas Pernell at future health promotion conferences.
Senator Kent Williams said in his letter honoring Sheriff Douglas Pernell, “As the first African American to hold the office of Sheriff in Dillon, expectations were high, and during his service as Sheriff, he consistently reached those expectations. He demanded no less of others than he did of himself.”
“His fingerprint will long be found in our community. His legacy will live on through the remembrance of his commitment, dedication, and service”. We are better today for his service.”
Seventeen Community Organizations also receive the 2023 Community Leadership awards for years of outstanding leadership and community service to the Dillon County Community.
Health Screenings were provided by our community partner CareSouth Carolina for three days.
Dr. Covington provided a Health Education Resource Booklet to participants to improve knowledge and awareness of chronic disease prevention education and resources in the community.
“The Walk with Pride for Life” Program started November 7, 2023 at the Dillon Wellness Center at 12 noon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the indoor and outdoor walking trails.
Walk at your own pace with a goal of 30 to 45 minutes per day.
