It has been over 6 years now since D.J. Moore completed an ACUHO-I (Association for College University and Housing Officers International) internship at Harvard University and almost 3 years since his international internship with Maynooth University. Since then, he has continued to serve college students in South Carolina while gaining recognition on the state and regional level for his work.
After graduating with his Master’s in Higher Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, D.J. began a role as a Community Coordinator at Coastal Carolina University in 2020. There, D.J. oversaw Tradition Hall and taught a first-year seminar on the college experience. D.J. also began his involvement with the state’s housing organization SCHOA (South Carolina Housing Officers Association) as the Technology and Marketing Chair. D.J. worked to revamp the SCHOA website and increased marketing initiatives to boost both SCHOA’s membership and membership engagement. D.J. has also been engaged with the regional-affiliate SEAHO (Southeastern Housing Officers Association) since the beginning of his Higher Education career in 2018.
In July 2022, D.J. relocated to Clemson University to serve as a Community Director for Clemson University’s Honors Residential College. D.J. provides day-to-day oversight for Clemson’s first and only residential college, has chaired the department’s DEISJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice) committee, and teaches an upper-level student leadership course each Spring. In October 2022, D.J. helped organize the annual SCHOA Conference hosted at Clemson University and co-presented on Recruiting and Retaining Diverse Student Populations in Living-Learning Committees. The SCHOA 2022 Conference saw an almost 300% increase in member attendance thanks to the hard work of the SCHOA Executive Board. During the annual conference, D.J. was also nominated and elected as the President-Elect for SCHOA. This October, D.J. will officially take the appointment of President for the organization and will be focusing on building year-round engagement and developmental opportunities for the organization’s members.
Since this appointment, D.J. recently applied, was selected, and participated in the Regional Entry-Level Institute (RELI) hosted through SEAHO. This prestigious institute invites professionals with 3 years or less of full-time experience across 10 southeastern states to apply for an intensive, week-long institute to prepare them to better serve as leaders on their campuses. Institute topics annually include sessions on assessment and evaluation, budget, crisis management, facilities, occupancy management, professional and career development, social justice, and staff supervision. D.J. was just 1 of 32 applicants selected for this transformational experience.
Since returning from the institute in Miami, D.J. has began pursuing his second Master’s degree in Human Resource Development at Clemson University. Coming from a family full of Gamecock fans, he promised to only cheer for Clemson when they weren’t playing against USC. D.J. shared that he owes his success to his mother, Freda Moore, and many of his other family members and close friends who have supported him throughout his educational, career, and life journey.
