DCS hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for their new Science and Technology Center on Friday, September 10, at 10:30am.
There was a great crowd present filled with friends and family members of DCS, but also sprinkled with distinguished guests from across the state. Those guests included: Dr. Phil Wallace, Mayor Pro-Tem of Dillon; Mr. Glenn Wagner, City Manager of Dillon; Representative Lucas Atkinson, District 57; Representative Jackie Hayes, District 55; Senator Kent Williams, District 30; Mr. Rodney Berry, the Office of US Congressman Tom Rice; Sherriff Douglas Pernell, Dillon County; Chief Deputy Jamie Hamilton, Dillon County; Mr. Mike Fanning, Deputy Director of SCISA; and many representatives from the County and City Council. Additionally, many members of the DCS Board of Directors were present along with representatives from First Bank and Bobbit Construction.
As the attendees gathered on the expansion site, Rev. Rob Pierce, a board member and Pastor of Latta Baptist Church, opened the ceremony with a welcome and invocation. Following Rev. Pierce, Dr. Michael Brown, Chairman of the Board, told the history of the formation of DCS which started in the 1970’s with a commitment from First Presbyterian Church, and other community congregations, to pray for a Christian school for our community. At the same time, finances began being raised and invested to be used as seed money to start the school in the future. For over two decades these prayers were lifted by many Christians throughout our community, then in 1991 First Presbyterian Church took the finances raised and started the school with twenty-six students and three teachers. Thirty years later, enrollment has reached almost 400 students with over 60 employees.
Mr. Mike Fanning, the representative from SCISA, the accrediting agency of DCS, participated in the program while reminiscing on the “visionaries” of DCS at its inception. Indeed, it is remarkable to see what this school has become since its beginning.
Mrs. Amanda Mussman, the Head of School at DCS, then told the attendees what this expansion would add to the school’s facilities: two state of the art science labs, four classrooms, a new library and media center, and new administrative offices. This expansion will be the new main entrance to the school facilities.
Rev. Matthew Adams, Lead Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Dillon, then closed the ceremony with prayer. In his closing remarks, he cited the Apostle Paul’s words in Ephesians 3: 20-21, which says, “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory…forever and ever. Amen.”
Rev. Adams said, “Truly, our Lord has done something here at DCS that was far more than all we have could have asked or thought, and to His name be the glory!”
Dillon Christian School’s top priority is “to provide the highest quality academic education possible while helping students develop a Biblical worldview.” Dr. Brown said that his prayer is always that the students at DCS would, “Be taught the truth, know the truth, live out the truth, and proclaim the truth.” Surely that prayer fits in hand-in-hand with the school’s mission.
DCS is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church in Dillon and is accredited by the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) and Cognia’s AdvancED.
As the news of the groundbreaking ceremony was shared across social media platforms many of our community members expressed their excitement for this new phase in the facilities at Dillon Christian School.
