Mr. James A. Grant, 90, died Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at McLeod Hospice in Florence, SC after an illness.
A funeral service was Friday, January 11, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Dillon. The family received friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church, directed by Cooke Funeral Home. Entombment followed the funeral service at Evergreen Perpetual Care Cemetery Mausoleum.
Mr. Grant was born in Raeford, NC, the son of the late Thurman Boyd and Hattie Thompson Grant. He was a Veteran of the US Army, where he served in the Korean War and received 2 Bronze Stars, as well as the Combat Infantry Badge. He was First Sergeant of Battery B 28th Field Artillery Battalion.
After his service with the army, he worked and retired from the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company after 35 years of service.
He lived in Lake View for many years and served the community in many capacities. He was a long-time member and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Lake View. He was most recently a member of First Baptist Church of Dillon. He served on the Lake View Lion’s Club, where he was Man of the Year in 1970-71. He was a Past Master of Hillsboro Masonic Lodge #308. He served on the Lake View Town Council for 22 years and Lake View Christmas On The Boulevard Committee. He served on the Dillon County Chamber of Commerce where he received the Outstanding Volunteer Award. He also served on the Pee Dee Tourist Commission, E-911 Commission, the Dillon County Courthouse Committee and the Dillon County Economic Development Board. In 1990, he was recognized by then Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. as one of SC’s Ambassadors of Economic Development. In 1994, Mr. Grant received the Dillon County Citizen of the Year Award.
He is survived by his sister, Gladys Hayes; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Grant; nieces, Brenda Bruce, Ann H. Mobby, and Sharon Monroe; and nephew, Allen Grant, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Wingate Grant and brother, Allen Grant.
