Joe Weatherford, lifelong resident of Latta, SC, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2018 at McLeod’s Hospice in Florence, SC at the age of 85.
Joe was born on January 12, 1933 in Latta, SC to Joe and Lester (Hodges) Weatherford. He grew up on a small farm near Latta, SC with his 3 sisters, Pauline, Christine and Clara and 4 brothers, Houston, Alton, Talmage and Herbert. At eight years of age, he was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Joe attended Latta schools and graduated from Latta High School in 1951. He worked various jobs including many years at Dixiana Carpet Mills. He was also active in the Latta Jaycees and was the proprietor of Weatherford’s Grill which became a gathering spot and place of employment for many of Latta’s youth, back in the day.
Preceding Joe in death were his parents, three sisters, and four brothers. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and a very special friend and caregiver, Jan Pate and her two sons, Zane and Blake Bryant. Special friends and neighbors, Paul and Laura Gasque, and David Earl and Jeannie Shelley were also caregivers to Joe for many years. The family wishes to thank and express deep appreciation to all of those who care for, loved and provided services for Joe in his last few years of failing health.
There was a visitation/viewing from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 27, at Cooper Funeral Home in Dillon, SC.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 28, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 200 Faulk Road, Marion, SC.
