School is out and the summer is here!
This is the part of the year when we can sit back, relax and enjoy. For most of us, it is the only time we can take that much needed vacation, visit family and friends or get lost in a good book or two. There’s always time to fire up the grill for a backyard barbecue. With so much going on in the summer, it can be hard to keep up sometimes. As we indulge in the joys of the summer, it is important that we remember our most vulnerable citizens.
Some of our young people are home and oftentimes idle with little or nothing to do. It can be difficult for parents to find affordable programs and camps to occupy our youth and keep them on the right path. There are free or minimal cost activities geared towards school age young people. The local library is a good place to start. Some area schools offer meals to students who want or need food. Vacation Bible School is a summer staple and a wonderful opportunity for young people to fellowship. Visit scsummerfood.com or call 1-866-348-6479 to find a location in your area.
Similarly, the elderly require extra tender loving care. The temperatures can be dangerous for seniors. Some seniors do not have air conditioners or they simply cannot afford to use them. Community centers and churches provide a cool respite from the potentially hazardous heat.
The library may offer programs or activities for seniors to enjoy.
Spending time at the library, at a community center or church not only gives the elderly an opportunity to interact with other people but it gives them much needed time outside of their home. Summer is the best time of year. We can make it safe and fun for everyone! Visit GetCareSC.com for assistance with seniors, and adults with disabilities.
Finally, let’s enjoy the summer, each other and be safe. There’s a lot to do and only one hundred days to do it. So, fire up the grill, grab a book, or take a nap! Does it smell like it’s going to rain?
